Dr. Osman tampil pertahan laporan kes liwat Anwar

Malaysiakini | 4 September 2008

Source : Merdeka Review

English version : Dr M and Keng Yaik Should Accept Responsibility for the Mess in UMNO/ BN and Country

Confronting The Fear of Change

By YB Khalid Samad, Member of Parliament for Shah Alam

I received an sms yesterday with questions which I think are worth answering/discussing. The sms had 7 or 8 concerns if you will and is repeated below:-

Please seriously consider the following in the future Pakatan:

1. The implication of Anwar’s over promised populist approach to the non-Malays, which may carry negative implications to PAS Malays thresholds.

2. DAP and PKR extremists, liberalists within the administration that might create social insecurity among the Malay PAS supporters.

3. The mass defection of UMNO MPs with their corrupt culture into PKR that takes lead in Pakatan direction.

4. The Islamic social welfare policies versus drastic fiscal policies that piggy back on budget deficits that subsidies populists at the expanse of future generation

5. Where is PAS in the whole process? Where are we heading? We may have destroyed the evil UMNO, but invited the Satan that bow to US and foreign super power.

6. Malay unity is very crucial to the Malaysian social, economic stability. Please mirror Indonesian’s reformasi. The people still struggle since 1998, while national economic resources are gang raped by super power.

7. Why not PAS take the leading role in forming the next government and unite Malays?

Don’t know what is best? The survival of PAS is at stake. It’s definitely sure US is behind Anwar to destroy NEP which is our social engineering insurance for stability. Now our country is heading towards anarchy situations!

I cannot help feeling sorry for the person who is genuinely fearful of the impending change. I believe his concerns are sincere and I wish to address them as follows:-

1. Anwar’s so called ‘over promised populist approach to the non-Malays’ as he puts it needs to be specified so that we understand what exactly he is worried about. There is this impression, for which UMNO is obviously responsible, that Anwar is selling out the Malays and Islam. I do not agree. To address the issues raised by the non-Malays, within the framework of the National Constitution is not tantamount to ‘selling out’ the Malays and Islam. This is as the position of both is firmly rooted in the same Constitution. So, in short, if he can try to specify where exactly Anwar ‘sells-out’, it is difficult to answer this question. He may find, to his surprise, that once he sits down to list all the items, he will end up with a blank page! This is the power of ‘perception’ which everyone talks about in the realm of politics.

2. The term ‘extremists’ which he uses here, I presume are the liberalists which once placed in the new administration will have a field day and turn his world upside-down. Again this is the perception and again I stress that everything which will be implemented needs to conform to the Constitution.

Secondly, we will rule by consensus (Perak being a salient example) and while PAS is a minority partner in the current set-up, we will ensure that justice will always be the prime consideration in all policies and decisions. We too have no intention of ‘selling-out’ anybody. I think the major question here that everybody has to answer is “can there be justice for everyone?” If the answer is yes, then there is no problem to proceed. However if it is sincerely believed that it is an unachievable ideal then why bother in the first place? For PAS we believe that justice was the purpose of the Prophets (May peace be upon them) and based on Islam, all are to be given their rightful share.

3. PKR may be taking the lead but they know as much as we do that they cannot lead where we do not wish to follow. We are not tied by our nostrils. That is partly the reason why PR will work. In the BN, UMNO was too dominant. Everything just got bulldozed through. When one started lining his pockets, true to the saying, “if you cannot beat them, join them”, the rest followed in droves.

As for the mass defection of the UMNO MPs with their corrupt culture, I wonder, would it be seen as a problem if they defected and joined PAS?

4. A lot of words but an equal amount of assumptions. “Budget deficits subsiding populists” etc. etc. The current BN budget is a deficit budget. It subsidises cronies and leaves the crumbs to the general population. It proceeds with Mega projects worth Billions while the returns are uncertain. As for the future generation, their future starts now! If the majority of parents are too busy making a living and financially very hard pressed, what future can they have?

We will be equally responsible to ensure that the PR budget is a responsible budget with the Islamic Welfare objectives clearly in sight. Again PKR does not rule alone.

5. PAS is strongly entrenched in the states which we have won. Our role in the defection of the BN MPs in Sabah and Sarawak is admittedly limited due to our limited presence there. However, it does not mean we have no role in the end, which is what matters.

The Satan referred to is Anwar, I presume. Well, again, thanks to the BN, this is a perception within certain quarters. Personally I have known Anwar for many years, since the 70s. His is a challenging life and all credit to him, he survived where many lesser men would have succumbed easily. I do not see any justice in the perception of him as Satan and unless people can, again, come up with specific charges which are proven without a shadow of a doubt; they should not go around making such statements. The Satans I see are those who line their pockets with the money that is meant for the poor, persecute people for no reason besides their dissent and the such. As for bowing down to the US, well again that is an unsubstantiated charge.

6. Yes it is true that Malay unity is important and we will work to build this but on the ruins left behind by UMNO. We have always stated that it is UMNO who stood in the way of the unity of the Malays and the Malaysians as a national entity. The time has arrived for us to prove this. Getting cold feet already ah? Biasalah tu!

7. Yes, this is what we all hope for, that PAS will be able to be at the fore-front of all things. However, this is something we will have to work for and not just demand. We have to believe that we can prove ourselves to the rakyat that we are the best. We cannot do this until we are free of the constraints placed, both physical and psychological, by UMNO/BN. Then we will be able to convince the Malays and the non-Malays that we are worthy of their trust and the most capable to lead this great country of ours. BUT this starts with a step forward, not backwards.

The NEP has been placed in the dustbin by BN long ago! The so-called DEB had been ‘upgraded’ to the DEC (Dasar Ekonomi Crony) years ago and while giving the Malays the crumbs, they kept the majority in poverty and thus dependent. UMNO had the gall to parade themselves as the saviors of the Malays! We need to wake up and realize that the opportunity for real change and real solutions has arrived. Seize the moment and Tawakkal alAllah!

Hari Sibuk Menziarahi Kematian bagi YB

27hb Ogos 2008

Charles Santiago : Dr M and Keng Yaik Should Accept Responsibility for the Mess in UMNO/ BN and Country

PRESS RELEASE ( 5 September 2008 )

Dr M and Keng Yaik Should Accept Responsibility for the Mess in UMNO/ BN and Country.

The Prime Minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, has drawn flak since the March upset election which saw the ruling coalition lose its stronghold in Parliament. His position within UMNO and as the country’s chief has become highly uncertain and fragile.

Dissidents in the ruling UMNO have demanded his resignation placing the blame for the shocking defeat solely on the premier’s shoulders. The strongest call comes from former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad who has made little effort to disguise his displeasure over Abdullah, his chosen successor.

Mahathir is now on the prowl to lobby enough support to oust Abdullah and restore the image of UMNO and BN. Whether booting out Abdullah will solve the problems faced by UMNO remains to be seen. But it is an irony to see Mahathir vow to soldier on to find the crucial solution after having wrecked the image of UMNO during his grip on power.

It is given that Abdullah has not done much about his rhetoric to wipe out corruption and clean up the country’s administration. But his is not an enviable task as Abdullah inherited a corrupt government from his former boss. Mahathir has gained quite a reputation for single-handedly ruining the judiciary, closing an eye on the abuse of power by the police force, domesticating the media, manipulating the electoral system and ignoring rampant corruption and money politics in UMNO and Barisan Nasional.

His 22 years in power was possible with the use of various laws like the Internal Security Act, Sedition Act, Official Secrets Act, Printing Presses and Publications Act and the University and University Colleges Act to curb any form of dissent in the country.

While Mahathir now claims that Abdullah is a liability to UMNO, the origin of his wrath might stem from the Prime Minister’s refusal to carry out Mahathir’s projects or self-styled legacy. The public brawls and insulting remarks started with Abdullah’s reluctance to continue Mahathir’s pet project of building a bridge linking the causeway to Singapore.

Mahathir might feel saddened to see UMNO lose the support it once enjoyed among the people and especially Malays but his hatred for Abdullah comes from seeing his legacy crumble.

In the same light, Gerakan president Dr Lim Keng Yaik’s sudden reprisal of UMNO is amusing. It’s as if Dr Lim just woke up from a deep sleep that lasted years. During his tenure as a minister, never once did he suggest that UMNO must re-brand itself to stay relevant to the people. UMNO’s corrupt leaders and racial politics suited the political aspirations of Dr Lim then. Now he is taking the high moral ground and is subtly threatening to quit the ruling coalition after his party’s humiliating defeat at the general elections.

Whether it is the MCA, MIC or Gerakan, leaders of these respective parties played along to curry favor with the ruling elites within UMNO. But now that Abdullah’s position is shaky and UMNO is losing its lock on power, we see the sudden mushrooming of dissidents within and outside the party.

In reality, all leaders like Dr Mahathir and Dr Lim must share the responsibility for the downfall of UMNO and the ruling coalition government. While Abdullah inherited the rot, Dr Mahathir created and presided over the rot. Dr Lim, meanwhile, was a mute spectator.

Philosophy Politics Economics - Tony Pua

Ahmad "I'll Not Apologise" Ismail

Barisan Nasional component parties were probably thanking their lucky stars for Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak's apology on behalf of UMNO over Datuk Ahmad Ismail's statement that Chinese minorities in the country were penumpang. While, it didn't fully resolve the issue, it certainly dissipated a fair bit of the minority communities anger over the racist remarks.

But no, this UMNO Bukit Bendera division warlord had other plans for MCA and Gerakan. Despite being pressed to apologise for his views and remarks, even after Datuk Seri Najib's face-saving apology, Datuk Ahmad Ismail, after "disappearing" for a few days, has stressed that he'll "not apologise".
"As far as I am concerned, I did not say or do anything wrong. So why should I apologise?"
He went on to reject claims that he was a racist and even cited many Chinese and Indians as his childhood friends.
Ahmad, in refuting claims that he was a “racist”, said he had been friends with many Chinese and Indian Malaysians since his childhood.

“I have never been racist and will never be. It is rubbish to suggest that I am a racist,” blasted Ahmad...
I really wonder, in his to-be-scheduled press conference on Saturday in Penang, whether these Chinese and Indian friends of his would dare to step up and stand behind this Datuk and provide personal testimonies to the effect that he isn't a racist?

In fact, I'd like to know which leader from Barisan Nasional will appear and stand behind him at the conference.

As a scriptwriter, I can envision 3 possible endings:
  1. Pak Lah gets woken up from his slumber by MCA, Gerakan, DAP etc., and decides to give this Datuk Ahmad Ismail a figurative tight slap and banish him from UMNO.

  2. Pak Lah continues his self-induced slumber to avoid antagonising a crucial warlord support in the coming party elections, leaving MCA and Gerakan red-faced with tails between their legs.

  3. Or would we instead get a apology but no apology type statement which we usually hear from Barisan Nasional leaders who shoot from their hip, "my statement was not intended to hurt anybody, but I'll apologise if you feel hurt by it." And of course, BN leaders, including MCA and Gerakan will claim moral victory and matters "resolved".
Where would you put your money? I know where to put mine. ;-)

916... Preparing the ground

To be or not to be... this 916 political event?

While the business community expresses despair at the protracted political uncertainty, and aspiring politicians take aim at claiming a pound of flesh off BN, the grassroots might be bewildered with the diverse potentialities a 916 could bring.

I feel we need to prepare the ground, and to explain to the masses of the options and potential scenarios -- good and bad -- in the days to come. Especially so, as Umno will not give up without putting up a ferocious fight while its component partners choose to jump the leopard-can't-change-its-spot racist ship.

For my part, I will speak among friends at two fora in Ipoh (Chinese medium) and Penang (English medium) on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Hope to see you there.

Al-Fatihah

Pak Samad returned to rahmatullah today, in the holy month of Ramadan. He was 84.

PakSamad.gifPak Samad (1925-2008), or A Samad Ismail, was an icon of the letters, and a nationalist who was jailed several times by the colonialists and by his own countrymen.

In 1953, while working as a journalist, he became a founding member of the People's Action Party along with Lee Kuan Yew.

However, he had disagreements with both Lee and the Utusan Melayu and left for Kuala Lumpur in 1959. He went on to head the Berita Harian and later the New Straits Times.

In 1976, he was again arrested in his adopted home in Malaysia under the Internal Security Act and was incarcerated until 1981. Upon his release, he returned to the New Straits Times and took up the position as editorial advisor.

He retired from journalism in 1988.

Pak Samad was conferred the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication Arts in 1994.

To my dear friends, Maria and Nuraina, my heartfelt condolences.

Al-Fatihah.

Veteran journalist Samad Ismail passes away Sep 4, 08 7:06pm

Veteran journalist A Samad Ismail passed away at 6pm this evening at the Pantai Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur. He was 84.

Samad, who is affectionately known as Pak Samad, had been suffering from lung infection and was hopsitalised on Aug 25.

His remains will be buried at the Muslim cemetery in Bukit Kiara after Friday prayers tomorrow.

Samad was born and educated in Singapore. He completed his Senior Cambridge in 1940, just before World War II began, and entered journalism almost immediately, starting as a cub reporter in the newly established Malay daily, Utusan Melayu.

During the Japanese Occupation, he did editorial work for the Japanese-sponsored, Berita Malai. The returning British jailed him in 1946 but only briefly.

After the war, he returned to Utusan Melayu as the assistant editor and his influence helped to promote Malay nationalism.

Former ISA detainee

His close ties to left-wing Malay nationalists and his anti-colonial stance led to a second arrest in 1951. Upon his release in 1953, he returned to his job at Utusan Melayu and became a founding member of the People's Action Party along with Lee Kuan Yew.

However, disagreements with both Lee and with the Utusan Melayu saw him leaving for Kuala Lumpur in 1959. There, he would head the Berita Harian and later the New Straits Times.

He remained a strong advocate of the Malay language and culture, and continued to explore the complex dimensions of race and politics in Malaysia.

He expressed some of these thoughts through his Malay novels which he began writing in the early 1960s.

In 1976, he was again arrested under the Malaysian Internal Security Act and was not released until 1981. Upon his release, he returned to the New Straits Times and took up the position as editorial advisor.

He retired from journalism in 1988.

In 1994, Samad received the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication Arts. He was recognised "for applying his intellect and journalistic skills to champion national independence, cultural revival, and democratic nation-building in Malaysia."

Doa Untuk A. Samad Ismail

[kemaskini jam 8.00 malam]

—————————————————————————————

Perkhabaran diterima memaklumkan Tan Sri A. Samad Ismail kini sedang tenat.

SAMBUTAN HARI KELUARGA AMPANG 971
30 Ogos 2008

sebahagian penghuni Kondo Ampang 971

Bapak Racist

Who heads the Biro Tata Negara (BTN) in this country? He must be Malaysia's Bapak Racist.

Senior parliamentarian Lim Kit Siang received a letter from a parent whose daughter was subjected to "extremism and un-Malaysian prejudices and communal poison" that came in the form of indoctrination courses for JPA scholars bound for studies overseas. Quote:

As part of the course, which is mandatory before they are sent overseas, all non-Malays are segregated and given lectures on the history of the country and how the immigration of the Chinese and Indians had taken place. And finally how the Chinese and Indians were given citizenship. The Malays too had their own similar sessions.

The instructors blatantly told them that they should not question the rights and privileges of the Malays as the non-Malays should be thankful that they were given citizenship status and a place to stay on their soil. My daughter together with the other non-Malay students was shocked and went back to their dormitories depressed. And to the Malay students, the instructors told them to be aware of this fact and not to mix too freely with the non-Malays.

A Malay friend of my daughter came back crying to the dormitory saying that she could not take the racist position taken by the government authority.

Kit Siang is furious and, like the parent who complained, regards the BTN’s racist indoctrination course as "a great disservice to both Malay and non-Malay JPA scholars as well as to Malaysian nation-building, the Merdeka social contract, the Malaysia Agreement, Rukunegara, Vision 2020 and Bangsa Malaysia".

Quite a mouthful, especially after we have just celebrated doses of Ahmad Ismail and Merdeka 51.
